They&#8217;ve shown no signs of slowing down since.<\/p>\n<p>After\u00a0<i>3 Idiots<\/i>\u00a0hit theatres, Pangong \u2013 the shimmering, turquoise 125km lake that served as backdrop for\u00a0<i>3 Idiots<\/i>\u2019s soaring conclusion \u2013 rose to unprecedented popularity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt all started with that movie,\u201d says Noori Noorjahan, an art restorer from Leh, Ladakh\u2019s tiny, oxygen-starved capital.<\/p>\n<p>Call it a testament to Ladakh\u2019s stark, haunting beauty or to the film\u2019s irresistible denouement, but seven years later\u00a0<i>3 Idiots<\/i>\u00a0still ushers in thousands more tourists than the region\u2019s fragile ecosystem can support.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-pullquote xs-relative col xs-col-12 xs-z1 xs-mb4 md-mb2 md-col-5 md-pl4 md-float-right\">\n<div id=\"10031386\" class=\"subbuzz-anchor\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pullquote js-subbuzz__title-text\">Ladakh is fast approaching its breaking point.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"mod-subbuzz-text-3\" class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-text xs-mb4 xs-relative \" data-module=\"subbuzz-text\">\n<p>At \u201cshooting point\u201d, the setting for\u00a0<i>3 Idiots<\/i>\u2019 final scene, families click selfies in the late afternoon haze.<\/p>\n<p>A woman searches for her son. They had arranged to meet in Rancho\u2019s Cafe, named after the film\u2019s cheeky hero, but a half-dozen restaurants all bear the same name.<\/p>\n<p>One features life-sized cutouts of Kareena and Aamir dressed as Ladakhis.<\/p>\n<p>Outsiders now outnumber residents during peak summer months, and Ladakh is fast approaching its breaking point.<\/p>\n<p>Near the water, tourists climb atop a mustard-yellow scooter, posed as photo op. Snow-dusted mountains loom dreamlike in the distance.<\/p>\n<p>And a crushed Coke can bobs slowly near the shore.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a fashion, you know,&#8221; says Stanzin Dorjai Gya, an environmentalist filmmaker whose documentaries tackle the impact of breakneck development on Ladakh\u2019s culture and climate. &#8220;Where the Bollywood actors make singing and dancing. They go there, take a photo, and come back.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-pullquote xs-relative col xs-col-12 xs-z1 xs-mb4 md-mb2 md-col-5 md-pr4\">\n<div id=\"10031265\" class=\"subbuzz-anchor\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pullquote js-subbuzz__title-text\">When it was still closed to outsiders, Ladakh produced zero waste.<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"mod-subbuzz-text-9\" class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-text xs-mb4 xs-relative \" data-keywords=\"cleaning\" data-module=\"subbuzz-text\">\n<p>To illustrate the scale of Ladakh\u2019s environmental crisis, Dorjai takes me on a tour of backstage Leh.<\/p>\n<p>On the outskirts of the city, a massive landfill, overrun with wild dogs, hides Leh\u2019s garbage from view.<\/p>\n<p>It spans several valleys. \u201cLeh is clean,\u201d Dorjai says. \u201cBecause everything comes here.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nearby, the stiff legs of a dead animal protrude from a heap of old wrappers.<\/p>\n<p>Mounds of technicolour garbage cast long shadows under the sun, as Kashmiri trash-pickers survey a cascade of plastic bottles.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are heroes,\u201d Dorjai says. No one else bothers to sort the dump.<\/p>\n<p>In high winds, trash plasters the nearby village of Saboo. \u201cWe do a garbage clean-up every year,\u201d one resident tells me. \u201cBut it just keeps growing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A decade ago, garbage trucks came eight times a day to unload waste. They now make 20 trips per day. Hotels and tourist restaurants are the main trash producers.<\/p>\n<p>When it was still closed to outsiders, Ladakh produced zero waste. Melted snow brought clean, irrigated waters to each household.<\/p>\n<p>And until new road connections opened the market to packaged goods, Ladakhis lived off their own produce.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were fully sustainable,\u201d Dorjai tells me. \u201cYou can\u2019t imagine the quality of life. \u2026 After that, more and more tourists came.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<blockquote class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-pullquote xs-relative col xs-col-12 xs-z1 xs-mb4 md-text-center\">\n<div id=\"10031460\" class=\"subbuzz-anchor\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"pullquote js-subbuzz__title-text\">\u201cThis is the rise time of Ladakh. But we\u2019re going to fall.\u201d<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<div id=\"mod-subbuzz-text-10\" class=\"subbuzz subbuzz-text xs-mb4 xs-relative \" data-module=\"subbuzz-text\">\n<p>Rural homestays have attempted to divert the concentration of tourists from Leh and Pangong while redistributing revenues to remoter regions.<\/p>\n<p>But everyone agrees more work is needed to thwart a worsening crisis. Visitors must be sensitised to the vulnerability of the region, while tourist practitioners need to realise that when their product disappears, so too will their profit.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery rise has a fall,\u201d cautions Noorjahan, the art restorer. \u201cThis is the rise time of Ladakh. Money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the name of development, money, employment, we are totally disrupting the natural beauty of Ladakh,\u201d Ali says.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt happened all of the sudden. \u2026 Even Aamir Khan himself was not sure that Ladakh would get that much publicity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Before I leave, Ali asks if this is my first visit.
