Choosing the right\u00a0<em>muhurta\u00a0<\/em>for the Holika Dahan ritual is particularly important, more so than for any other Hindu festival ritual. Ideally, Holika Dahan should be carried out during the auspicious occasion of\u00a0<em>Pradosh Kaal<\/em>, when day and night meet (which starts from the time of sunset). However, it mustn&#8217;t be done until\u00a0<em>Bhadra Tithi<\/em>\u00a0is over.\u00a0<strong>The exact\u00a0<em>muhurta for\u00a0<\/em>Holika Dahan<em>\u00a0<\/em>in India will vary depending on the location and time of sunset.<\/strong>\u00a0For example, for 2021, astrologers have\u00a0calculated it to be\u00a0between 6:48 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. in Mumbai. This comes from the story about Holika in the Hindu text, the\u00a0<em>Narada Purana.\u00a0<\/em>Holika attempted to carry out her demon king brother&#8217;s wish to burn his son\u00a0Prahlad in the fire because\u00a0Prahlad worshiped Lord Vishnu instead of him. It was believed that Holika couldn&#8217;t be harmed by fire, so she sat in it while holding the child. However, she was charred to death and Prahlad was saved due to his devotion to Lord Vishnu, who protected him.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul class=\"comp mntl-sc-block travel-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul class=\"comp mntl-sc-block travel-sc-block-html mntl-sc-block-html\">\n<li>On\u00a0<strong>Holi<\/strong>, people will usually spend the morning throwing colored powder and water on each other. These celebrations die down by the afternoon. There are no rituals that need to be performed.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Lathmar Holi\u00a0<\/strong>&#8212;<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The women of Barsana and Nandgaon villages, near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, beat up men with sticks in the week before Holi.
